India is a home to the world’s largest number of blind population. Of the 285 millions blinds or those with low visions across the globe, over 12 millions are from India. What is worst, about 60 to 75% of cases are of avoidable blindness remained uncured due to poverty driven factors and lack of adequate Medical Infrastructure.
As per WHO estimates, the population of blinds and those with partial blindness, shall increase to 40% more by 2030. It is a pitiful sight for a welfare state like India.
Eye is the most important part of human body without which entire world is dark and lifeless. Eye care is a critical aspect of human life. Out of the total 12 millions of population of blinds or with impaired vision in India, 3.2 millions are children, blind or with partial blindness, hardly able to receive any education.
Cataract is the common ailment affecting 75% of those with impaired vision, 20% are due to refractive errors and 5% are due to glaucoma related problems. Among 70% to 80% of them are curable, however, if remained unattended, it results in to partial or total blindness.
National Enlightenment Mission a joint initiative by Laxmi Raman Acharya Foundation (LRAF) and National Youth Foundation (NYF) is a national service mission dedicated to the eradication of blindness among economically challenged segment of the society deprived of adequate medical care and infrastructures. Project is executed through a systematically evolved service module implemented with the support of dedicated team work, supporting national and international agencies, backed by adequate medical paraphernalia and well equipped Eye hospitals.

Services under National Enlightenment Mission:
Registration of patients in OPD.
Identification and classification of patients as per the ailments.
Distribution of medicines.
Correction of Refraction error.
Distribution of Spectacles and dark glasses.
Stitch less cataract Surgery through IOL.
Accommodation and food to patients.
Post operational care by Doctors and Nursing Staff.
